When we moved out of Central London and bought a house in the middle of Epping Forest, one of the biggest benefits that I instantly noticed was the improvement in air quality; being surrounded by trees rather than traffic or constant construction works instantly felt better on our lungs, and we all slept a lot better at night. Of course, that doesn’t mean that it is all perfect in regards to our air: we chose to live in an old period house with areas of damp and mould spores, while all those trees create a lot of problematic pollen allergens. As for our lifestyle, we are owners of a much-loved dog who scratches and sheds his hair and dander all over the place. Something that I have also become more acutely aware of recently is the amount of harmful paint VOCs released via my love of decorating and upcycling. This is why, for some time, I had been looking into getting an air purifier for the home.

With a wide range of air purifiers on the market it can be difficult to decipher the right air filtration system for you. As someone who loves design, I knew that it needed to look good and avoid being an eyesore. It also couldn’t be bulky or too heavy for me to transport room to room (huge floor purifiers would just get in my way as the rooms in our home are compact). It had to be easy to use; I also was determined that it must be sustainable (I’d recently learnt that 6,000 tonnes of used air filters went to landfill each year - this was a cycle that I did not want to be a part of). With the cost of living, I also required something that was of low energy consumption as I couldn’t afford to bring anything into the home that substantially increased our bills.

I was introduced to the Briiv Air Filter and it instantly seemed like the perfect fit. Made in the UK and a recent Red Dot Product Design Award winner, the compact filtration system comfortably sits on a shelf or a sideboard and uses 100% renewable and natural materials to remove pollutants from the home (a one-hour Briiv cycle will effectively improve the air quality in a 36m² (387ft²) living space). The black base and glass top at first glance make it look like a sleek and modern portable speaker, but the novel addition of real green moss over a natural filter makes it visually interesting and aesthetically pleasing (as well as being a revolution in eco-friendly design). Plastic-free and compostable, Briiv uses natural micro-structures of moss, coconut, carbon, and silk to filter air. When these natural filters need to be replaced, the old filters will naturally degrade in soil in a matter of months.

Why Do I Need An Air Purifier?

Recent statistics highlight that 7 million people die prematurely from air pollution every year. When you cook, clean, light candles / the fire or experience condensation, this all contributes to poor air quality that can have a noticeable detrimental effect on brain function and cause long-term health issues.

How Does Briiv Work?

Within interiors, there has been a huge shift towards biophilic design and the inclusion of houseplants within the home to ‘bring the outside in’, which in turn bolsters clean air and creates a calming environment. Briiv’s design replicates this natural purifying cycle (turning Briiv on for just one hour is equal to 3,043 medium size houseplants in reducing air pollution within the home).

Getting started with Briiv is incredibly simple; opening up the recyclable box, all I had to do was remove the bag containing moss, plug in the USB cable, then place the moss within the glass lid.

Is It Easy To Use?

One of my biggest fears when I open up a new piece of smart technology is that I will be so overwhelmed with complex jargon in the user manual, I will give up before I have even started. Luckily, Briiv can be turned on manually or via the Briiv app, where you can schedule your Briiv to turn on at certain times of the day and check your filter health (so that you know when any filters need to be replaced). All you need to do to get started with the app is download it onto your IOS or Android device, then connect it to your Wifi. You can also sync it to your smart speaker to turn Briiv on with voice control.

I’ve been using my Briiv for a while now and I can feel the difference in a room when it has been on - it’s like I’ve had the window open (minus the sneezing) as the air feels fresh and crisp. The modern design blends in with the other contemporary decorative objects that feature throughout my home, and it is compact enough for me to place on a cabinet or a bedside table. The matrix filter only requires replacing on average once every 3 months (one 3-month filter costs £6), and there is no plastic to dispose of - I just toss it into my garden.
