Last week, I was invited to London’s Ham Yard Hotel (whose interiors are designed by the world-renowned designer Kit Kemp) to view the first collaboration between Kit and wallpaper and fabric house GP & J Baker. One of the long-let rooms within the hotel had been recently adorned with the wallpaper, fabric prints, embroideries, weaves and stripes that constitute ‘GP & J Baker x Kit Kemp,’ so it was great to see these new designs in situ as curtains, upholstered chairs and dressing the walls, rather than just samples and swatches.

I’ve always been a fan of Kemp, admiring her modern British style that effortlessly combines lots of colour and pattern, so I was excited to see how she had worked with the heritage textile and interior brand GP & J Baker. The end result includes whimsical, large-scale tree murals, folkloric plate print fabric in green and chocolate colourways and playful potato prints, amongst a host of embroidery detailing, plain linens and a rework of an archival GP & J Baker design, dating back to the 1920s.

‘Robina’s Dinner Party’ is a large-scale print of plates created by one of Kemp’s favourite ceramicists, Robina Jack. Featuring a profile of creatures such as cats, dogs, rabbits and cockatoos at the centre, the plates have a decorative rim and are lined up in a sequence on a choice of both a wallpaper or a fabric option, making a show-stopping feature wall or a statement headboard.

One of my favourite wallpaper designs from the collection: ‘Tweak’ in red.

I’ve really gotten into wall murals recently after using one in my own home, so I loved the Tall Trees mural design - originally painted by Melissa White - that was inspired by a walk through woodland on a misty morning. Every time you look at this mural you spot something new - be it a mythological-looking rabbit or the chestnuts dangling from the trees.

On the more modern side are the ‘Tweak’ and ‘Wiggle’ prints, which are a bit more versatile than other designs within the collection. Small-scale, repetitive zig-zags are divided into stripes and are available in popular earthy tones and on-trend yellow, blue, pink and green.
