Glam nostalgia

Trees adorned with angel hair tinsel were a huge trend up until the 1980’s when they went completely out of fashion. However, this shaggy tree style has come full circle and Christmas trees dripping in single strips of silver are now massively on-trend. The trouble with decorating with angel hair is that it is quite hard to get right - get it wrong and it can be a total disaster. Ideally, stick to one colour of angel hair only rather than mixing up shades and spread the strands out evenly across the tree (if it’s applied in clumps it can look like a messy bird’s nest!) Keep the rest of the tree paired back with just a few simple decorations and lights and let the angel hair take centre stage.

Decorate with bows, ribbons, fabric strips & trimmings

Ribbons and trimmings are not just for the presents! One of the most popular styles of Christmas tree this year will be those adorned in bows and fabric strips. It has a very cute, vintage feel and it’s a trend that can be embraced inexpensively. Simply invest in a few rolls of ribbon or cut up old clothes into strips and tie them to your tree branches.

You can stick to all one colour, or mix up your ribbons and bows like The Makerista has below with her beautiful tree that blends blue bows with burgundy ones.

The key thing with this trend is to use ribbons everywhere! Tie them around the base of wall lights, stick them at the top of mirrors and wrap your table cutlery in them. I particularly love this idea below from Rowen & Wren who have tied ribbons around dinner candle sticks:

The key colour: Warm, Autumnal tones of burgundy, caramel, brick and burnt orange

These warm honey shades have been really popular as paint colours this year and this will continue into our Christmas decorations. Rich browns, tan colours, burgundy tones and burnt orange hues have an autumnal feel that also works well at Christmas. They are sophisticated shades with a nostalgic nod to traditional Christmas decor.

Paper Chains

Another vintage paper decoration that is back in a big way! We’ve seen folded paper baubles and Swedish stars rise in popularity in previous years and 2023 is the year that the paperchain makes a big comeback. Sustainable and super simple to do, simply cut old magazines or coloured paper into strips, loop each one through the next and hang them from each corner of the ceiling.

Hand-painted decorations

There has definitely been a move away from mass-produced bauble packs to individual, artsy, hand-painted or handmade decorations for a touch of whimsical decor. No two handmade or hand-painted decorations are the same and they make for a more personal, bespoke scheme.

Bells

While bells have always been associated with Christmas, this year they will definitely have more of a ‘moment’ and will be featured heavily within Christmas decor schemes. Hang bells off fireplace mantel garlands, on door wreaths and off the staircase bannister for a modern, yet traditional, look.
