How To Make Use Of The Space In An Awkwardly Shaped Bedroom

Awkwardly shaped bedrooms plague houses up and down this country. Corners sticking out, uneven floorboards, a fireplace in the middle of the room that doesn’t even work - there’s a lot of work a potential bedroom space can throw at you! And to turn such a space into your ideal bedroom, you’ll need to get creative with your design. Here are some tips that could help with that.

Don’t Worry Too Much About Symmetry

It’s nice to have a bedside table on either side of the bed (especially if you’re not the only person who sleeps in the room), but if you don’t have room to place a table on either side at a symmetrical level, either do away with one or swap tables for a shelf above your headboard (or two compact floating shelves either side if you can). This way, you still get the function you’re looking for, you just need to slightly compromise on the design.

Do Away with a Wardrobe

You don’t need to try and shove a wardrobe in the corner where it won’t quite fit the wall and edges out. Instead, buy a free standing clothes rail, cut down to the size you need it. Not only does this allow you to use an awkward space without losing any amount of storage, but it gives your bedroom a chic highlight as well. For anyone worried about a blank, negative space, fitting rails like these creates a more positive and ‘lived-in’ atmosphere.

Colourdrench the room

If your room is a weird shape and has lots of boxy elements, paint the entire room (this includes the ceiling, skirting, windows and door) in the same paint shade. This will help make awkward spaces blend in with each other and uneven corners will not be highlighted by contrasting colours.

Build in Storage

Building storage into furniture is a good way to maximise space - no matter how much or little you have! If you don’t already have drawers fitted in the bed frame, all you’ll need are some shallow yet wide boxes to slide under there. Or, if you’d like to put a seat in the bedroom, think about a box ottoman with cushions fitted on top. The more you hide the storage away, the more space you’ll have for misc items and the things you need.
