A Colourful Homemade Christmas Door Wreath: How To Get The Look
One of my favourite parts of decorating for Christmas is to make my own homemade Christmas door wreath. I find it a really enjoyable creative process that produces something bespoke to dress your home in for the festive season. This year, one of my previous homemade wreaths made it onto Architectural Digest, which was a massive ‘pinch me’ moment!
In the run up to Christmas, I always keep an eye out wherever I go for materials to use in my wreath. These might be items in local florists, or on the roadside that I could forage later (last year, my wreath was made up of a lot of dried thistles and old man’s beard that I picked up in a nearby field).
My colourful wreath for this year was dictated by a large bunch of pink peppercorns that I picked up in a local independent food store near me. I knew the pink would provide a vibrant touch on top of the green base, so they were going to be my focal point. I also wanted to use some sprayed pink asparagus fern that I decorated my Christmas tree in to keep my Christmas decor scheme cohesive.
Everything I used to create this wreath is listed below:
For the base:
10” copper wire wreath base with moss
string (to hang the wreath)
Hardy green spruce and conifer
Foliage and florals:
Dried Pink peppercorns (one large bunch)
Hypericum (pink)
Wax flower
Rosehips
Dried mimosea
Sprayed pink asparagus fern
1 cut down faux spray of pink foliage
Decoration:
Bells attached to floristry wire
I don’t think there is ever a wrong way to make a wreath, it totally depends on what feels natural to you. I tend to make a secure base of greenery first before going around again with the wire to make the decorative parts. All I would say is play around with materials and colours - consider what sits nicely next to another and keep to complementary tones.
I would also suggest paying attention to texture - think about what adds visual interest and layers the wreath. I especially love using berries over flowers in my wreaths for this reason.
Usually, I adorn my wreaths in lots of ribbon, but as my wreath had so much going on this year, I stuck to one piece of fuchsia ribbon and added some decorative bells. You get quite a few of these bells in one pack, so I’m going to make a garland with the rest!
