Colourful Christmas Decor Ideas to Make Your Home Feel Extra Festive

With Christmas only a few weeks away, I’ve been asked recently about why I add a lot of colour to my Christmas decor each year. I've guess a colourful Christmas isn’t overly traditional, but I adore using lots of blues, pinks, oranges, purples and greens when decorating my home for Christmas.

My home is quite a colourful home; I enjoy living with colour throughout the year, so it is natural to me to want to use colour when I making my handmade door wreaths, dressing my tree, or adorning my fireplace mantel.

Each year, I tend to get inspired by one colourful thing: a roll of beautiful velvet ribbon, a dried floral, or a fabric remnant could the one thing that is the starting point for my decor scheme that Christmas.

Last year, I picked up some sprayed pink fern and placed it in my tree, then added decorations that complemented that pink shimmer! Another year, I made some large bows from some stripy Laura Ashley upholstery fabric, they then dictated my Christmas fireplace styling.

If you are looking to create a colourful Christmas in your own home, my top tip is to source ribbon in brighter colours. I use ribbon everywhere at Christmas; I once used lots of ribbon to create my viral bow tree. The following year, I wrapped my tree in ribbon garlands and I use ribbon in my door wreaths. Ribbon is great to drape off your staircase banister, around doors and also used to hang ornaments in a decorative way (I like to hang small ornaments off light fittings at Christmas!)

Another budget-friendly way to bring in colour is to make your own paper chains in coloured paper. Simply use a craft guillotine to cut down the strips and them staple them together. You can also use fabric scraps to create draped garlands or to them to your tree.

I always make a home made door wreath each year and try and add as much colour as possible. Dried pink peppercorns work so well in Christmas wreaths, as do hypericum berries.
